FOOD IS MEDICINE: Fuel Your Life, Not Just Your Cravings

At Meraki CrossFit in O'Fallon, MO, we believe that what you put on your plate is just as powerful as what you do with a barbell. Nutrition is the foundation of performance, longevity, and vitality—and it's not just about abs or macros. It’s about living well, aging strong, and showing up for yourself every day. That’s why our in-house CrossFit Level 3 trainer & 7-year affiliate owner, Amy Posadas, is here to guide you toward sustainable habits that support your goals and keep you accountable for the long run.

Let’s break it down:

Fuel for Life: Nutrition vs. Entertainment vs. Addiction

Food should be fuel, not a coping mechanism. In a world full of hyper-palatable snacks and emotional eating triggers, it’s easy to treat meals as entertainment—or worse, develop a dependency on sugar, caffeine, or processed comfort foods. It’s time to shift the mindset: eat for energy, for healing, for strength. Learn the difference between true hunger and emotional cravings. When you fuel with intention, everything else aligns.

Whole Foods: What It Really Means

Whole foods = foods as close to their natural state as possible. Think single-ingredient items your great-grandparents would recognize: vegetables, fruits, quality meats, legumes, and nuts. These foods deliver the nutrients your body actually knows how to use—no guesswork, no additives, no fake flavors. Real food heals. Real food fuels.

Water: Your Daily Non-Negotiable

Most people are walking around dehydrated and don’t even know it. Water is essential for digestion, energy, joint health, and recovery. Aim for half your bodyweight in ounces daily. So if you weigh 160 lbs, shoot for 80 oz minimum. If you’re sweating hard in the gym, you’ll need more. Water first. Coffee second.

Animal Protein: Why It Matters

When it comes to building muscle, maintaining strength, and aging gracefully, complete protein sources are key—and that’s where animal protein shines. Animal proteins like beef, chicken, eggs, and fish provide all nine essential amino acids in the right ratios, plus they’re more bioavailable than most plant-based alternatives. That means your body can absorb and use them more effectively.

Why Protein is Critical as We Age

As we get older, our bodies naturally lose muscle mass—a process called sarcopenia. Without enough protein (and resistance training!), this leads to weakness, poor posture, slow metabolism, and higher injury risk. Prioritizing protein helps preserve muscle, supports joint health, and keeps your body moving the way you want it to—for decades to come.

Listen to Your Body

You are your best data source. No trendy diet or influencer knows your body like you do. Pay attention to how foods make you feel—do you have energy after eating, or a crash? Are you recovering well from workouts, or feeling sluggish and sore? Are your cravings in check, or out of control? Tune in. Your body is constantly sending signals. Learn to listen, and you’ll start making choices from a place of power, not confusion.
